This week we are going to look at the emergence of the modern world in the United States. This took place in the early 20th century. There's a lot to explore here, and many connections to our own time 100 years later.
Directions: read through the PowerPoint and answer the questions.

2. The novel ends where it begins. Why do you think Steinbeck did this? Would the novel be any different if Steinbeck had it end in a different place?
3. Discuss any alternatives George had to shooting Lennie. What would be the consequences?
4. What foreshadowed Lennie’s death? Students may cite brief examples from the entire novel.
Creative Option Project for "Of Mice And Men" - Due May 14th
You can choose between the following options for your final project.
1. Creative Performance: Compose a song/rap encompassing any of the themes, people, symbols, and events present in the book. Use original music and lyrics. Should be 2 to 3 minutes long and cover people, places, themes, events, and symbols of the novel. You can do this "live" or record it.
2. Creative Writing: Utilize a talk show format to interview one or more of the characters. Use original questions and
provide an answer similar to how you think each character would answer. Your presentation should last about five minutes and be able to capture the people, places, themes, events, and symbols of the novel. This can be prerecorded.
3. Non-Fiction: Produce an expository, informational 3 to 5 min video that discusses the book - its characters, events, subject matter, themes, places, and discuss why this is a classic American novel.
4. Fiction: Compose a modified ending or epilogue to "Of Mice and Men". The final product must be at least two pages typed and show each character’s perspective. You must make the ending or epilogue make sense to the characters and events of the book.
5. Argument: In a paper or video format, debate George’s final decision. Use facts, page citation, your opinions, and examples from the novel as well as outside information if needed. Argue for or against what George did. Video should be about 3-5 min. long and the paper should be about 2 pages.
Note: All written work should be 12 point font, 1.5 line spacing, and use a common font. Papers should have a cover page, with a name and the title of your paper and/or the option assignment number chosen.

- On page 70, Crooks says to Lennie, “‘I ain’t no southern negro…I was born right here in California.’” What does he mean by this? How was life different for African Americans in the south compared to those out west in California?
- On page 70, recall the scene in Crooks’s quarters once Curley’s wife arrives (pages 76-83), focusing on what happens after the passage quoted above. What is Curley’s wife threatening to do to Crooks? How did Crooks react? Why did he react this way? What do you think about his reaction? Should he have reacted differently?
- How did Candy react? What do you think about his reaction? Should he have reacted differently?
- How would you have reacted if you were Crooks? If you were Candy?
- When Lennie visits Crooks, why is Crooks so mean to Lennie? Think about why he told Lennie that George would leave him.
- Explain what Crooks and Curley’s wife might have in common.
- Explain why Crooks finally allowed Lennie into his segregated living quarters. Think about the role each play in the novel.

We will continue with our debates! This should be interesting since we have never done this on Zoom before, but I think it will work very well once we get the hang of it.

New Debate Topics will be chosen and we will set new dates up. This time we have the option for one on one debates, three rounds only (9 minutes). They can use a mix of citations and "improv" thinking on your feet. The opening and closing will be included in our three rounds. Start thinking about who you want to face and what your topic will be.
